Originally renovated by legendary brewer Chuck Hahn in the 1980s, The Malt Shovel Brewery in Camperdown is Lion’s main brewing facility for premium craft beers in the Sydney metropolitan area, brewing beers under the James Squire, Kosciuszko, and Mad Brewers brands.
Collins and Turner were engaged by Lion to develop a masterplan for the site and implement a detailed design for refurbishment works which include a new bar and reception space, new boardroom and conference facilities, BCA upgrades including disabled access, and a program of ESD initiatives to bring the performance of the site in line with best practice within the industry.
New works are juxtaposed against the heritage building fabric, and located amongst and alongside existing brewing equipment. The first-floor reception space will be linked via a new glazed gantry structure to the brewing hall below, giving visitors views directly into the main production space. Materials in the refurbishment complement and enhance the existing building fabric including copper, raw oxide finished steel, and reclaimed timber.
