James Squire Brisbane

James Squire Brisbane

Brisbane’s South Bank is the home for James Squire craft beer in Queensland. The 1400sqm project for Lion and the Mantle Group was carried out as a collaboration between Collins and Turner and Brisbane architects Baber Studio and D’Occhio.

The space retains the semi-industrial feel of the building’s shell. Within this, a series of objects and surfaces in precious metals, amber glass and timber provide contrast, creating a series of dramatic and varied spatial experiences, which reference in an abstract contemporary way the life of Australia’s first master brewer. The visual focus of the project is a 12 hectolitre microbrewery that brews beers exclusively sold at the venue. The brewery is elevated heroically into a high-level location above the main bar space suspended on a purpose-built steel gantry truss and fully glazed.

The venue opened to acclaim in 2015, and has quickly become one of the most popular venues for Craft Beer fans, families and tourists in the Queensland capital.
