RIDBC Centre of Excellence

A national centre of excellence for deaf and blind learning

Our 2018 proposal envisions the development of a Centre of Excellence for Deaf and Blind Education for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC), located on a new site within Macquarie University in northern Sydney. Designed as an inclusive, integrated, and forward-thinking educational environment, the project consolidates seven existing schools, along with clinical services, research facilities, and administrative functions, into a cohesive and purpose-built setting.

The masterplan is conceived as a “campus within a campus,” positioned sensitively within a grove of mature eucalypts to form a protective walled garden that balances openness with refuge, connection with focus.

The architectural and landscape design work in concert to support an evidence-based pedagogical framework that prioritises nature play, sensory engagement, and wellbeing. A network of landscaped courtyards separates and defines a series of interlinked building blocks, each accommodating specific educational or therapeutic functions. These outdoor spaces serve as extensions of the learning environment—safe, tactile, and stimulating settings where students can explore, interact, and learn through movement and experience.

A sculptural trellis structure weaves between the building clusters, unifying the individual campus buildings while providing partial weather protection, glare reduction, and solar control to sdjacent facades and circulation spaces. The organic form of the canopy creates a sense of continuity and identity, mediating the transitions between interior and exterior environments. This interconnection between architecture, landscape, and pedagogy fosters a rich and inclusive campus ecology—one that supports students of all abilities, encourages collaboration among educators and researchers, and strengthens the relationship between the RIDBC and the broader Macquarie University community.

The resulting proposal is a visionary learning environment: a centre of excellence that celebrates diversity, inclusivity, and the transformative power of design to shape meaningful educational experiences.
