A space for community beside the Georges River
Our design for the new Community Hub at Light Horse Park advances Liverpool City Council’s ambitious vision for the transformation of this important urban parkland along the banks of the Georges River, in the heart of Western Sydney. The project articulates a refined civic presence within the landscape, delivering a building that is both highly adaptable in function and deeply attuned to its distinctive social and environmental context.

The new building will accommodate a broad spectrum of community-focused programs, including a flexible meeting hall, cycle hub, café, public amenities, multi-faith prayer space, and a range of ancillary support areas. These diverse functions are unified beneath a distinctive, free-form roof structure that defines the building’s identity while providing shelter and shade to generous covered outdoor areas. These external zones extend the building’s use beyond its walls, enabling outdoor events, informal gatherings, festivals, performances, and communal dining.
Conceived as a ‘forest of colour’, the building’s expression celebrates the cultural richness of Liverpool—one of Sydney’s most diverse communities. The vertical structure, glazing support and façade screening elements are articulated with a vivid, tapestry-like palette, lending the building a playful yet refined presence in the park. This approach creates an abstract identity that is vibrant and welcoming and memorable, while also offering visual privacy and screening for internal spaces.
Sustainability is embedded through the building’s orientation, material choices, and integration with the surrounding landscape. The design contributes positively to the public realm, reinforcing pedestrian and cycle connections across the park and towards the river.
With its combination of cultural expression, functional versatility, and architectural clarity, the Community Hub is poised to become a landmark civic space for Liverpool. A development application was submitted in May 2025, with construction anticipated to commence in early 2026.
