Formerly a carpet warehouse, the existing precast concrete structure will be largely retained and repurposed, aligning with the project’s strong sustainability objectives. The new facility will house four indoor multi-purpose courts catering to a wide range of sports, including basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball, badminton, gymnastics, and pickleball. Designed with inclusivity in mind, the centre also incorporates features to support accessible sports programming, including provisions for wheelchair users.

Complementing its core recreational facilities, the centre includes administrative areas, a reception, modern change rooms, spectator seating, and a kiosk. A generous 600-square-metre upper level offers flexible community spaces for meetings, dance, classes, and a variety of local programs. Externally, landscaped areas, half courts, and outdoor fitness spaces connect to a new public forecourt that links directly with the Alexandra Canal and the wider Green Links network. End-of-trip facilities and ample bike parking promote active, sustainable transport.

Environmental performance is integral to the project. Over 95% of the existing structure is being reused, and extensive site remediation has been undertaken. A rooftop solar array will generate renewable energy, while natural light, ventilation, and rainwater harvesting systems reduce operational demands and environmental impact.

A defining architectural feature is the 80-metre sculptural awning—a dynamic screen constructed from industrial access grating, referencing the site’s industrial past. This element provides sun protection, filters daylight into internal spaces, and delivers a bold contemporary identity to the building. Its rhythmic form is both a symbol of renewal and a subtle reference to the movement and choreography of sport.

Construction is currently underway, with completion scheduled for early 2026.
