Macquarie Street Tower

A three-dimensional vertical tapestry for Parramatta

In 2016, Collins and Turner were invited by Dyldam to participate in a design excellence competition for the redevelopment of the former News Ltd Cumberland media site, a significant parcel of land located on Macquarie Street, in the heart of Parramatta. Working in close collaboration with PTW Architects and landscape architects McGregor Coxall, the team developed the competition-winning masterplan and architectural proposal for a dynamic new mixed-use precinct fronting the Parramatta River.

The vision for the precinct integrates high-density residential development with commercial uses and vibrant public spaces, reflecting Parramatta’s evolution as one of Sydney’s most important urban centres. Comprising three mixed-use towers and a major new public space, Collins and Turner’s contribution to the scheme centres on a mid-rise 35-storey tower that seamlessly combines hotel and residential accommodation, supported by a range of amenities for guests, residents, and the wider public.

The tower includes a mix of dining, wellness, and event facilities—restaurants, function spaces, fitness centres—and is crowned by a rooftop pool club that offers expansive views across the city and river. These programs are designed to activate the building at multiple levels, encouraging public engagement and creating a vertical community that supports both short and long-term occupation.

The building’s form diverges from the strict geometries of the original planning controls, sculpted instead to optimise solar access not only for its own occupants but also for surrounding heritage sites and public spaces. This sensitivity to context enhances both the environmental performance and civic contribution of the project.

Visually, the tower is conceived as a three-dimensional tapestry of woven metallic elements. Through a layered approach to glazing, sun-shading, and facade treatment, the building presents a shimmering, golden presence on the Parramatta skyline. The facade responds dynamically to orientation, views, and climate—balancing transparency, thermal performance, and sculptural expression—while reinforcing the project’s identity as a landmark destination within the revitalised city centre.
