Shelter as sculpture in the heart of Barangaroo
The Barangaroo Rooftop Pavilion is a 200sqm sculptural structure conceived as a free-form architectural artwork. Designed to provide weather protection and a versatile setting for informal gatherings, outdoor work, and programmed activities, the pavilion sits within the landscaped terrace of ITS Tower 3, and offers a dynamic new vantage point across Sydney’s newest harbour precinct.

Located on the third-floor podium roof of ITS Tower 3 at Barangaroo, the project sets out to transform part of the level 3 terrace, creating a tranquil, year-round destination for tenants and visitors. The design introduces strategic landscape enhancements, custom built-in furniture and a small kitchen, below an abstract sculptural pavilion canopy that brings shelter, comfort, and amenity to an otherwise exposed environment—enabling new patterns of use throughout the day and across the seasons.
The canopy’s fluid geometry appears to float lightly above the terrace, wrapped in a delicate, veil-like screen that forms a continuous, light-filtering surface. This finely detailed system modulates light and air, creating an ever-changing play of shade, shadow, and reflection that shifts with the sun’s movement throughout the day. Beneath it, the sheltered space supports a wide range of activities—from quiet individual work and informal meetings to social gatherings and community events.
As daylight fades, the pavilion undergoes a subtle yet striking transformation. Discreet in-ground lighting integrated into the surrounding landscape gently illuminates the underside of the canopy, casting a warm, inviting glow that highlights the sculptural qualities of its free-form structure. The interplay of light and shadow enriches surface textures, turning the pavilion into an intimate, almost cave-like retreat that encourages gathering and reflection against the backdrop of city and harbour lights.
Aligned with the project’s commitment to sustainability and minimal intervention, the design carefully incorporates elements of the original terrace landscape. Existing plantings, paving, and structural features were retained, re-used and integrated wherever possible, reducing demolition and construction waste while preserving the site’s established character.
Fabricated from lightweight, high-performance materials, the pavilion’s structure balances technical precision with expressive form, dissolving the boundary between art and architecture. The result is a refined urban landmark—a place of respite, collaboration, and inspiration that enriches Barangaroo’s evolving public realm and celebrates craftsmanship, material innovation, and the enduring dialogue between built form, light, and landscape.
