A magical landscape for learning

Occupying 1,400 square metres, the centre is conceived as a series of interconnected, internalised spaces that wrap around a continuous, immersive landscape designed for exploration, play, and learning. Central to the design is the integration of over 700 square metres of external and internal gardens, forming a rich sensory environment that celebrates nature and encourages curiosity and engagement. The project was developed in close collaboration with Aspect Studios, whose landscape expertise contributed to the creation of a magical and fluid natural setting within an otherwise rigid commercial framework.
One of the central challenges of the project was to overcome the spatial limitations of a commercial office tenancy, particularly the 3.2-metre floor-to-ceiling height. This was addressed through a design strategy that softens and blurs spatial boundaries, creating the illusion of depth, height, and openness. Undulating, free-form landscape surfaces traverse the floor plane, while mirrored ceilings reflect movement and form, creating an almost dreamlike sense of expanded vertical space. These design gestures transform the interior into a tactile, dynamic, and inspiring environment for children and educators alike.
Natural and recycled materials are used throughout, alongside contemporary child-safe finishes such as softfall surfacing. Extensive planting is incorporated into both indoor and outdoor areas, reinforcing a deep connection to nature and supporting the centre’s commitment to environmental education and sustainability.
A key architectural element is a sinuous, sculptural storage wall that winds through the plan, separating the communal garden from individual learning, rest, and staff areas. This wall is multi-functional—integrating storage, windows, serveries, portals, and doorways—and plays a crucial role in facilitating flexible use of space while providing utility and delight.
The Barangaroo Early Learning Centre sets a new standard for early education environments in dense urban settings—balancing creativity, functionality, and sustainability to create a nurturing, innovative space for the next generation of learners.
