Habilis : Architecture AU – Award for Social Impact 2025 Winner

We are thrilled to share that Habilis has won the 2025 @architecture_au award for social impact.

The award recognises projects that promote the common good – conceived to award practice that extends the spatial possibilities of architecture to advance the discipline and to empower its users. Projects may relate to social cohesion, racial justice, inclusive housing, accessibility, equity, social sustainability or other areas where design can make a difference to society. This accolade is the only national recognition of this type of work within Australia.

Habilis is a registered charity dedicated to providing long-term, stable and low-cost housing for people living with chronic mental illness, mainly schizophrenia.

The adaptive re-use of a former furniture factory, the first centre at Summer Hill provides a safe and supportive environment designed to break the cycle of homelessness, hospital re-admission and incarceration.

Habilis Summer Hill includes 20 units, plus a live-in caretaker unit, along with onsite clinic and an administration office. Ranging from 25-45 m², each unit has a bathroom, fully equipped kitchen and a private balcony. Screening and landscaping balance privacy with the opportunity for communal interaction, with a shared garden overlooking the Hawthorne Canal.
